The Shreveport Bonsai Society exists to promote the art of bonsai

Welcome to the Shreveport Bonsai Society sticky icon

We hold regular meetings on the second Saturday of each month.
Meetings are held at the Barnwell Art and Garden Center, 601 Clyde Fant Pkwy in Shreveport.
We hope to create interest and inspire participation by both advanced and beginner growers of bonsai and to increase enjoyment of bonsai. We advance appreciation of bonsai through club participation in exhibits and shows. We supply our members with information on bonsai, including methods, sources of supplies, and experiments. Everyone is welcome.

Blogging

A blogging feature is available for dues paying SBS members. For those who don't know, a blog is an online shared journal. I've always thought keeping a bonsai journal improves your bonsai by helping you remember what works and what doesn't and when things were done. The bottom line is the more things you remember the more you learn.

Do I need a password?

I hope everyone is enjoying the new look of our web site. I In this week’s meeting I was discussing the new web site and the question came up ‘Do I need a password?’. The easy answer is you don’t need a password, but when you see what a password lets you do you’ll want one. Shreveportbonsai.org provides access to articles and pictures for the general web surfing public but also provides additional features for dues paying SBS members. Unregistered visitors can view stories, certain pages and the gallery.

New Soil Component

I was searching the web for 'horticultural aggregates". I stumbled upon a new product called Growstones.

Web Journal Tips

by Jeff White

I've discovered 2 things that make life easier when using a bonsai blog or journal, pictures first and keywords.

Native Louisiana Trees for Bonsai

by Charles Canfield

Tired of the usual Junipers? Bored with the indoor Ficus? Frustrated with buying Bonsai trees by mail, only to have them die in the Louisiana climate? Why not look around our backyards or just down the road at the native trees available to the Bonsai enthusiasts in our area. Why do we go to the effort to collect Bonsai material when it is already available in the store or as near as our mail box? First is the joy of being outdoors with the anticipation of finding that little masterpiece on the next hill. Second, you find (and afford) a tree that has been trained for 20, 50 or 100 years? Third, every tree you collect is guaranteed to withstand our harsh summers and mild winters.

The Blog will work

I'm pretty sure the online Blog will work. You can add pictures to Blog entries. The real trick is going to be being very aware of using the same keywords when making entries. This is so that you can use the search feature effectively. If you have a tree that you call "My Favorite Elm" you need to always use "My Favorite Elm" in all blog entries. In fact, tree names should be all one word. Searching for "My Favorite Elm" will return every blog entry with the word elm in it. I've given some of my trees alpha-numeric identifiers for use in blog entries.
