'Growstones' is a product made from recycled glass that is melted down and infused with air to create a rigid foam block. The blocks are processed into particles that resemble lava rock. It supposedly performs like expanded shale in tests. It retains moisture and improves aeration and drainage. It's available in a small size that is between 1/16" and 7/16". It will be available in 10 qt bags. Here's the kicker, it's available in a wide range of colors! Imagine mixing soil and instead of haydite you have a choice of reds, browns, grays or black. It also comes in greens, blues and white but I wouldn’t recommend those colors in a bonsai mix. I've requested more information and some samples. It's not commercially available yet but when it is I plan to try it out. I don't know about cost yet but maybe I can get it in bulk.
